It’s quite common for the hair of all black animals to be bleached to some extent by the sun rendering it brown. The only way to completely avoid it would be to keep the horse indoors all the time – NO I AM NOT ADVOCATING THIS!!!

I have a black horse, and in the summer around july-sept he turns into a dirty blond as I would like to call it. I live in the south so we get really hot sunny days. Right now he is nice and black... But give it a couple months and it will all be gone. This year I am getting him a sleazy to wear and we will see how that works out for him .

Sounds like sun bleaching. Make sure every time she gets sweaty you wash off the sweat and dry her, and yes get a nice fly sheet for her.

It is perfectly normal for horses to get paler in the summer and is a result of bleaching from the sun. A fly sheet should help.

its nothing to worry about. whatever is going to happen is going to happen and its not like you can change her color. i have a bay POA and he is getting more and more roan every year. and it isnt from age change or anything because he is only 8 or 9 lol!!
but i once knew a horse who always changed colors drastically (bay one year, gray the next)
horses change color, its ok…nothing bad

Either she is Dark Bay, or the sun is bleaching out her out. A blanket will help that. =]

It’s simple sun bleaching – but I don’t think it’s important enough to keep a sheet on the horse all the time! Sheets cost money, they get torn up, and they just aren’t as comfortable to a horse as going naked.

You can get a supplement called Black-As-Knight, and just feed it year-round. It’s safe and effective. I used it on my sorrel pinto mare and it brightened her coat a lot. Cheval International is the company, and they have a website you can search by that name.

My first horse was a chocolate pinto, almost black with every shedding but soon becoming obviously brown. The other thing she would do, is to turn roan before shedding out each season – both spring and fall. I could pluck out the old winter hair and ‘write’ or make other patterns in her coat.

The sun lightens their skin, I know there are like supplements you can give them throughout the winter to keep their coat dark in the summer, and the only other thing would be a fly sheet unless you want to keep them in all day which would not be the best situation for the horse….
The supplement I know of is Black as Knight haha I just remembered it, but you have to give it through the winter and spring, for it to work in the summer because while the winter coat is on it helps the summer coat or something like that its quite expensive, I wanted to do it buy my mom wouldn’t let me /:

The sunlight bleaches her hair to brownish during the summer, just like people's hair. A blanket or shelter from the sun would help it from doing this.
