I have two obvious paints, I am told that they are quarter type paints, but don’t have any records of their parents. I want to know if it is possible to register them since they have obvious paint markings. I was told I could but I don’t know for sure and I would like to know how, if it is possible.

No. A breeder’s certificate (proof of parantage) must be submitted when applying for registration for any horse, regardless of color. You can see the APHA requirements here: http://www.apha.com/breed/regguides.html

You might be able to register your horse with one or both of the Pinto associations.

The National Pinto Horse Registry will accept grade (non-pedigreed) horses:
"GRADE: A Horse or Pony with Pinto Coloring for which there is no proof that Sire or Dam is Pinto Colored, or Owner cannot or does not wish to prove Pinto Coloring ancestry at time of first registry." http://www.pintohorseregistry.com/RulesProcedures.html

The Pinto Horse Association of America will only register mares and geldings if there is no proof of pedigree, or mares, geldings and stallions if miniature horses or ponies of undetermined pedigree.

  1. unless a big change has been made in the rules …..no….a registered horse must have registered parents and you have to be able to prove it……you have paint horses but not registered horses
