The AQHA is a breed registry for pure bred Quarter Horses.
The APHA is a color registry for Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds or any mix of the two that meet the color standards.
At least one parent must be APHA registered for the foal to be registered. References :
If it has two registered quarter horse parents, it can be registered with AQHA. AQHA has done away with the white rule, so all can be registered. HOWEVER, the excessive white horses are penalized in the show ring against the more solid colored ones. And if your horse has two squares inches of white that is not a blaze or a stocking, it can also be registered as a BREEDING STOCK paint. Paint now has three separate registries. One for colored horses with paint parent, one for solid horses with a paint parent (this used to be the breeding stock) and breeding stock has become the registry for the crop out quarter horses. AND if your horse has enough white (15 square inches) it can also be registered PINTO. So you have the possibilty of having a triple registered horse. How do I know? I have one. Loud crop out overo. Has papers in AQHA, APHA, & PtHA. And he has been shown in all three breed associations. References : Horse Owner for 35 years. Lifetime member of AQHA, APHA, and PtHA. Have served on the color breed council.
In order to qualify for registration with APHA, a foal’s sire and dam must be registered with either the APHA, or American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), or Jockey Club (Thoroughbred.) Beginning January 1, 2005, all horses presented for registration must have at least one registered Paint parent (Regular Registry or Breeding Stock).
Can a Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred with excessive white be registered in Regular Registry?
No, it would not be eligible. Starting January 1, 2005, all foals registered to the Regular Registry are required to have at least one registered Paint parent (Regular Registry or Breeding Stock). References : aphaonline.com (FAQ 2004)
