York horse sales….?
I’m thinking of going to the sales next week. I’ve never been before, could someone tell me what to expect, how things work etc?
Get there early, go the day before even and get your bidding number. This will give you an opportunity to see the horses that will be put up for auction. If this is a higher end auction then the catalog is prepared ahead of time and you can see if there are any horses that interest you by thier description. If you arrive early you can get there in time to examine the horse and even try him out. You can observe him in his stall and ask questions about him.
Have a set amount that you are willing to spend and stick to it. Auctions are popular because sometimes people over bid on their budget and pay more for a horse than they intended to. But they are also great places to get bargains. Just remember you bid on it, you bought it…as is.
There will be an auction. You should decide what your budget will be before you go and no matter how much you love a horse, stick to it or you may find yourself spending $100,000! Bid at the end when you think that the last bid was made. Then you will most likely get it. They will show you the horse, probably in a ring. If you want a fast horse then look for powerful hindquarters for speed. If you want a horse that is very strong then look for good leg muscles. If you want a horse that can jump look for well-angled hocks for jumping, and muscular hindquarters.

I’m not sure about the horse sales in your area but in the Iowa City, Iowa area we have at least two large sales monthly. One sells between 800 and 1200 horses per month and although you have a variety to chose from, sometimes it gets really sad.
A lot of horses that come in aren’t in great shape, some are lame or just poorly taken care of and if you aren’t careful you might just take one home! I have done this with all intentions to save the animal, but it doesn’t always work out as you primarily hoped.. My advice is just to be careful when buying at an auction and be aware of what you are getting yourself into. Granted, there are MANY great horses sold and you could find your dream horse! I’m just a big sucker for animals and want to save all the badly taken-care-of horses!!!
