What could the black patches on my horse be?

admin on November 9th, 2009

In January, I bought a three year old bay mare from a horse sale. She had been body clipped before I got her, and now that her coat has grown back, she has these dime sized black patches all over her barrel. It just looks like the hair hasn’t grown back. I thought that maybe they were dapples, but they just keep popping up everywhere. What could they possibly be?

They are called Bend Or spots. It’s perfectly fine, nothing medical…just genetic.

I’ll send you a picture.

One of the horse’s I ride has a Bend Or spot on his nasal bone.

  1. Are they bald? If the hair is there, I would say they are part of her markings, but if they are bald, I would call a vet and find out what they are. I have a horse with skin cancer but her patches are flesh colored and resemble scabs, so I don’t think that is it. sorry, I would call the vet just for peace of mind.

  2. I would say rain scald If they are small patches where the hair is gone. Also if there are patches of little bits of hair you can pull out. Most horses that are in pasture get them from moisture buiding up on their coat from dew or rain. You can get a bottle of betadine solution (not the surgical scrub) and rub it on the spots. It is just a fungus but clears up real quick.
