Where are you in Louisiana? If you’re around Shreveport or even Natchitoches, check the local Thrifty Nickel/American Classifieds. (www.americanclassifieds.com). If you can’t find them in the Shreveport edition, check the Longview, Texas edition. We have lots of breeders over here and I’m always seeing young QHs in the Thrifty Nickel. If you’re close enough and have enough experience, try the horse sale up at Paris, TX.
Just be careful of some of the horse dealers in the paper who offer "gentle" horses for $300 and $400….some of these are okay but others aren’t. Also be careful, if you go to an auction, of the horses being drugged to make them seem more gentle.
I don’t know as much about the southern part of the state, but they have Thrifty Nickels/American Classifieds down there, too. Also check your local feed stores. With the down-turn in the horse market, you should be able to get a young QH (maybe not the best bloodlines) for around $800, although you might have to take a weanling or yearling and you may have to pay for registration.
If you need more help, just email me personally. I’m originally from near the Shreveport area and my father and brother are still in the cattle business, so they hear about a lot of horses for sale. Wish I knew of one off-hand…..
