Perhaps the Horse of the Year title is not a foregone conclusion. Zenyatta gave the crowd what they waited for–and the patrons responded by cheering, clapping, and waving–as she ran her unbeaten streak to 14 with a magnificent performance in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita.

Zenyatta looked uncomfortable for the first 200 yards and was last the first time by the stands, but she was flying down the stretch the second time and rolled by Gio Ponti to win the $5-million race.

Most voters had Rachel Alexandra penciled in as Horse of the Year but Zenyattas victory over males has re-opened that argument.

Zenyatta was a bit reluctant to load, but the assistant starters had no problem getting her in the gate once they locked arms behind the big daughter of Street Cry and coaxed her forward.

  1. The most impresive …
The most impresive thing is the way she won…She was dead last and went around the competition making it that much harder…she has done this before against other females, but all the experts said she would need a great start and an even greater finish…instead she had a horrible start and an incredible finish…Results…hall of fame…EAS…

  2. @edwinsandovala The …
@edwinsandovala The same people who degrade her win because of the quality of the field were dissing her before the race because there was just NO way she could beat a field of that quality. It’s called “moving the goalposts” and it’s the last refuge of those who really don’t have facts to argue with but still want to hear themselves yakkin.’

  3. what a performance …
what a performance .I bet against her thought she was running with BOYS but she showed such a Big heart .For sure a mile stone race & performance in the history of racing !

    @GBeret83

Thank you for realizing this!! It looks as if Jackson may be looking to find a way out of the Apple Blossom, according to the NY Times of a few hours ago.

Z’s trainer is sending another filly out of his barn to challenge RA in her next race.

  6. sweetepnoy, I …
sweetepnoy, I recently made the comment that to the rest of the racing world, the U.S. must look like a bunch of idiots. To have an undefeated race-mare, 14 for 14 lifetime, a two-time Breeders Cup Champion in 2 different divisions, and the only female race-horse to ever win the Breeders Cup Classic since the inception of the race in 84′, and she’s still never been recognized as HOY. If they think that about us, I could completely understand it. JMO.

  7. NTRA ranked …
NTRA ranked Zenyatta #1 and the so-called HotY #2. I guess some of them wised up and put the REAL QUEEN where she belongs. On top. Not a single race in 2010 either. Higher than Quality Road who already has two starts. Deep down, they know Z is the better horse vs Rachel. Back-to-back BCC wins, ans Zenyatta is simply the greatest American distaffer ever. The greatest I’ve seen in MY lifetime.

  8. Freeze it at :22, …
Freeze it at :22, it looks like she is going to jump into the infield.

    I totally agree…EAS…

  10. I agree with you …
I agree with you able…alot of people are downplaying Zenyatta’s incredible victory…if she would have lost they would have said they knew she was overrated…now that she won they say the rest of the field was not that great…Zenyatta lived up to the hype and did it in dramatic fashion…I lost my voice when I saw this live…I will never forget the name Zenyatta…EAS…

  11. One of the greatest …
One of the greatest runners of all time. i thought Secretariat the greatest horse i have ever seen, this filly gives him a run for the money. WHAT A ATHLETIC.

  12. I’ve asked myself …
I’ve asked myself that question probably 100 times. What if STS, a horse that refused to be beaten in 2009 had come to the Classic and raced a mare that wasn’t going to be beaten on that day. Makes for quite a unique set of circumstances. I think the outcome likely would’ve depended on how STS took to the surface. If he had, with Zenyatta getting such a poor start, STS is the one horse that she probably wouldn’t have caught. But if he didn’t take to the surface, she would’ve beaten him too. JMO.

  13. yea i do look at …
yea i do look at that but also she has always been a closer i dont doubt she has heart i know she does but the feild wasnt tht spectacular even if they were g 1 n g 2 what was the time for the race n quarters

great figure in horse racing a lot of great quotes ffrom bill nack like “the sport never stopped exhaling, the sport got the wind knocked out of it “

STS’s sire, Cape Cross isn’t a bad sire himself.

  16. I remember him …
I remember him saying that! Why I like Bill Nack so much!

Wow, thanks :D Was that her highest ?

  18. @BloodyHeartedSoul …
@BloodyHeartedSoul How do you know that? You don’t.You simply think it.How do you know STS wouldn’t have been just as effective on this surface which has been taken to very well by the European contingent over the last couple B.C’s.His action was very fluent, the way he travelled in his races was majestic as was his finishing speed. How can you possibly say he was overrated when his record in Europe is unique.

  19. I’ve watched and …
I’ve watched and analyzed this race a lot of different times. Even if you’re a skeptic, and one who say’s ” the Classic field wasn’t as great as it was made out to be,” it was still a “very good” group of colt’s. All Grade 1 or Grade 2 winners, most multiple winners. To have never raced the boy’s, and never raced 1-1/4, plus overcoming such a horrific start giving away a lot of ground tells me ton’s about Zenyatta’s heart. Bottom line: I like Zenyatta’s chances of beating Rachel Alexandra. JMO.
