What are some classes in high school that will help me become a horse breeder?
admin on November 28th, 2009
I need to know as soon as possible.
FFA is your best start but if you have any fear of horses or can not touch EVERY part of a horse its not a good field to get into. A stallion that is a sweetheart in the field is not the same horse when a mare is around and in season and there are parts that need to be cleaned before he gets to the mare. I do not want to discourage you, but it is not as easy or glamorous as people make it out to be

I am also planing on becoming a breeder when I get older
I am in high school too and right now I am taking Biology and Genetics

Here are few I would suggest:
Business
Farm Management or any and all Agriculture classes (even if the aren’t 100% focused on horses they will be super informative)
Biology
Economics
Calculus
Public Relations or Public Speaking
Oh, and just for your information you may want a second career as well because you do not make a lot of money breeding horses. You know what they say (and it is right) they best way to make a small fortune in horses is to start with a large fortune!
PLEASE if you do decide to breed, breed for quality NOT quantity, there are WAY too many backyard breeders that breed a no name mare to a no name stallion and get stuck with a horrible foal!
I am all for conserving a bloodline and making a horse better, so please research your breed before you decide to actually breed! Horses are not like dogs, their gestation is 11 months, and even then they can have MAJOR complications delivering so you may or may not end up with a foal even though you spend tons on vet bills, extra feed, etc.
Good Luck!

Really there isn’t too much you can learn in high school in this subject. This subject is so specialized and many high schools don’t focus on horses. Main Animal Science classes will deal with a broad area of animals with a large portion of it on small animals. If this is something you really would like to do to the future, I would recommend going to college to major in equine managment or equine science. There are quite a few equine colleges around the country. Many are private colleges and cost a bit but are great colleges. There are also some public state colleges that carry these programs as well. Just realize there isn’t a large amount of money in the equine business practice.

Like others said, I guess the best HIGH SCHOOL classes would be math and bio (some are giving you answers for college). But really, the absolute only thing that will do you much good is hands-on experience. Start researching stud farms, see if they need an extra hand. Even if you start as a working student mucking out, you’re still in the scene.
