1993 Breeders Cup Classic – Arcangues + Post Race
Arcangues and Jerry Bailey have never been formally introduced.
“Still don’t know how to pronounce his name,” said Bailey, the New York-based jockey who rode the 133-1 French long shot to the biggest upset in Breeders’ Cup history today. “I’ll learn, though. Before that paycheck comes, I’ll learn.”
The horse paid $269 to win.
“Well, they say the squeaky wheel gets the grease,” Bailey said.
“Too bad I did not bet,” said Alec Wildenstein, the son of the horse’s owner, Daniel Wildenstein. “I saw the price when I walked back, and it was too late by then.” Dirt Suits Him Well
Arcangues (pronounced Ar-CONG) was entered in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on a whim, and Bailey gained the ride by chance. The 5-year-old horse, named after a 15th century castle in the French resort of Biarritz, had never worked on a dirt track until a month ago, but it was trainer Andre Fabre’s hunch two months ago that dirt suited him.
“He has his days,” Fabre said. ‘Good American Jockey’
Next up was finding a jockey.
“I’m always happy with good American jockeys,” Fabre said. “They’re fantastic.”
The American they called was Bailey, who won this year’s Kentucky Derby and Travers Stakes aboard Sea Hero. The deal was signed nine days ago, although Fabre did not so much as offer advice.
“There was no plan,” Wildenstein said.
“I didn’t even talk to Fabre until I was already on the horse in the walking ring today,” Bailey said. “The groom was trying to tell me something, and he spoke French and I don’t, so I really didn’t know. I mean, I couldn’t understand my instructions in the paddock. My knowledge of French is, ‘Oui, oui.’ Thank you is a universal language, so I said that a few times. They were very nice people and gracious.
“All Fabre really told me when I was walking out of the ring was don’t override him in the beginning.”
The result was even more surprising due to Arcangues’s health. “He has a back problem,” Wildenstein said, “and every once in a while, he slips a disk in his back.”
But the horse took to Bailey immediately. “Not that I knew him,” Bailey said. “I’d never laid eyes on him until I walked in the paddock. And, you know, I think that is an advantage. Sometimes a horse runs better on his own style than when a jockey is forcing him.
“But, hey, he’s probably never heard of me, either.”

I was there and let me say Arcanges looked great in the paddock. I loved the way he was calm yet confident even surrounded by great horses. He wasn’t intimidated at all. That’s why I spent about 30 minutes staring at him in the form. I just couldn’t see how he could pass all these great American champions. I thought about it but just couldn’t make the bet. Shaking my head as he rolled past Bertrando, I wanted to break something very valuable!! Like Baileys neck…..ha ha
