Quality Road’s Breeders’ Cup Freakout

Quality Road delayed the start of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic for 5 minutes when he decided he was NOT going to go into the gate. A few common tricks were used, but when the blindfold was put on and he found himself standing in the gate, he presumably panicked and lost his head, bucking and kicking and trying to bolt. Thanks to the assistant starters, a human hand was always clenched on a rein and he wasn’t able to bolt off and run blind (literally) down the track and crash and kill himself.

He was scratched from the race with a cut on a leg, and went down in history as the first (and so far, only) late-scratch in Breeders’ Cup history. The horses were reloaded and Zenyatta blew away to win.

I’ve never seen a gate mishap like this one. It’s one thing to see a horse flip over and be lying down in there, but it’s quite another when a 1100 horse has lost his head and puts himself and those around him in grave danger in a metal contraption.

Friesians as Dressage Horses?

I’ve been thinking about going from Hunter/Jumper to Dressage and in looking for a horse, I’ve been considering a Friesian. I’m besotted with Jane Savoie’s Moshi (which is probably why I want a Friesian). I know there’s a big stink over Friesians being used as riding horses instead of cart horses. So, I’m kind of wanting some arguments for and against it.

If you don’t think Friesians should be ridden, please make a valid argument as to why not. Thanks!

whats the best bit to use for a horse training in barrels?

I have an 11yr old QH mare and im training her in barrels and the bit im using is a tom thumb stainless steal bit…I heard when training you should use a snaffle what do you think?

Hi Danielle,
Find out what type of bit your horse prefers. Many horses like snaffle bits better than solid mouthpiece bits because the snaffle has more give. A solid bit does not allow for as much turn, but has better stopping power than a snaffle bit

Many barrel horses work well in a gag bit. This type of bit is normally a snaffle bit but instead of being joined to the side of the bit, the ends of the mouthpiece can slide up and down as you pull the reins. This is a favorite bit among barrel racers. Some gag bits also come with a nosepiece to help get control of the horse’s nose

Use a few different bits on your horse until you find the perfect bit for your horse’s needs.

You need to experiment with a couple of different bits to see how your horse responds to which bit the best.

2009 Breeders Cup Classic – Post Race

Perhaps the Horse of the Year title is not a foregone conclusion. Zenyatta gave the crowd what they waited for–and the patrons responded by cheering, clapping, and waving–as she ran her unbeaten streak to 14 with a magnificent performance in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita.

Zenyatta looked uncomfortable for the first 200 yards and was last the first time by the stands, but she was flying down the stretch the second time and rolled by Gio Ponti to win the $5-million race.

Most voters had Rachel Alexandra penciled in as horse of the Year but Zenyattas victory over males has re-opened that argument.

Zenyatta was a bit reluctant to load, but the assistant starters had no problem getting her in the gate once they locked arms behind the big daughter of Street Cry and coaxed her forward.
