It depends on the horse and the owner. There are horses who need shoes that don’t have them (because they throw them as soon as they get them) and horses who don’t need shoes who have them (because they do a lot of jumping and the owner just thinks they need them).
Get your vet/farrier to asses the horses feet.

The myth that white hooves are weaker is just that.

I just want to hear everyone that’s ever been involved with horse breeding’s opinion etc.

I want to eventually breed sport horses. I want to breed Warmblood and Warmblood crosses (WBxTHB etc…) I am still young (21) , but would like to realize my dream in the next 2 years or so.

Having a farm is no problem, I have a HUGE farm that I can use, as I live and work on this farm.

Obviously, I have no money at the moment to buy a well bred mare, and I will not be buying my own stallion, I will be using a stud from another WB stud farm close to me. These stallions are amazing and have excellent breeding lines!
Has anyone started a horse breeding farm with little or no money? Would there be any way for me to get money for the purchase of the Mare and for the Stud fee?

Yes, I know there are MANY other expenses (vet, farrier, feed, hay etc etc etc)

I am just wanting some advise from people that know what they are doing aswell.

Thanks..

If anyone wants to personally e-mail me, about anything, feel free:
cassmeyer1991@gmail.com
Ok… I know it is hard work and lots of money, but it is my dream… and if I don’t succeed then I can only learn from it and move on!
Thank you all for the truthfull comments, I enjoy constructive critisism.
And I apologize to those who think this is a spelling test! LOL!
Oh, and I am from South Africa, not America….
Pease.. oops, I mean PEACE! LOL!!!!!

Your best option is to buy a decent warmblood mare with good breeding, expect to pay anything from R20 000 to R200 000 an have her covered by the best stallion you can find this can cost anything from R10 000 for an average stallion to R100 000 for imported seman.

Unfortunately to run a profitable stud with good quality horses is not really an option. You wont be making any money within in the first year while your horse is gestating and by the time the foal is born and weaned at around 8 months. You need to make sure the foal is halter trained and handled well you also need to decide at what age you want to sell the foal, as a weanling, a yearling, a 2yo etc. most people don’t want a young foal as this just means extra costs for them for a useless horse. Sounds mean but is reality. Also if you put the horse up for sale as a weanling and no one wants to buy it people are going to wonder why the horse has been for sale for so long and be less likely to want to buy it.

So if you only sell as a 2yo you will have to factor in the extra costs of keeping the horse for a further 18 months.

Let’s see, your mare cost R50 000, your stud fees were R15 000, the mare cost R1000 a month to keep while in foal plus the foal cost R1000 a month once born. That’s 11 months in foal, the foal has to sell for at least R26 000 to cover your costs before its even dropped plus the 24 months you keep him for. You have to get at least R40 000 for him as a 2 year old to cover your costs asking anything under R50 000 and you wouldn’t make a profit.

Now not many people are willing to spend R50 000 on an unproven 2yo who only has decent breeding because you don’t know if he will have decent conformation until he at leat 2 or 3.

The whole breeding game is a huge gamble and you have more chance working at another stud farm than starting your own.

SA is flooded with warmblood studs and I know of a few people who have tried starting up studs only to crash and burn.

A local RI in my area decided to branch out on retraining OTTBs and started breeding Arabs x welsh ponies. They bred a stunning cross colt who had the most amazing dun colouring but after 2 years up for sale they eventually sold him for R5000 as a 4 yr old to one if their adult pupils who 6yrs later still cannot sell the pony on. Didn’t help that the riding community didn’t agree with their training ideas. They later imported a gorgeous Selle Francais colt which they started competing as a 3 year old?!?!? Needless to say done of his foals sold and they eventually had to sell this gorgeous stallion.

Im from PE and know of at least 3 TB racing stud farms, 4 SAWB Stud farms, 1 Appaloosa Stud Farm, 3 Arabian Stud Farms, a Welsh Pony Stud farm and several below grade BY wanna be studs. And that’s in the Eastern Cape alone. Think about JHB area or CT where the equine population is much higher than the EC.

Do you really think SA needs another stud farm with the amount we have already?

I one day would love to own an Andalusion stud in SA as there aren’t any studs in SA at the moment but I know it probably won’t happen. It’s good to dream but you need to learn when dreaming is just too much.

I don’t deny that maybe one day you could make it work but at your age with your financial backing it isn’t possible. It would be a better idea for you to get a TB or two off the track and retrain him up, maybe you can start earning some money that way and start getting some capital behind you but you will need to be a good rider for that an especially a good jumper as that is where the focus is.

I bought one of my horses off the track, paid a pittance for him, R1500 and after 3 years of owning him I sold him for R50 000. I wasn’t after financial gain when I had him. I owned him because I loved him but had to sell him due to financial reasons.

http://www.ebbandflow.co.za/forsale.asp
This is the site of a local trainer in PE who buys TBs off the track, jump starts their careers and sells them at a very nice profit. Because he is so well known, most horse sell within 2 or 3 months and he asks somewhere in the region of R20 000 to R60 000 per horse and sometimes more and these are often horses he has paid under R5000 for.

Just an idea. Use it don’t use it, but I’m telling you now that a stud farm at your age isnt the best option.
Ek is jammer, maar ek dink dit sal nie werk nie.

I heard it is for bringing a horses legs under but what does it help with?? and how do you collect a horse? im asking cuz my horse is on the lazy side and im not going to use a crop. and he is also slow on lunging too. if it can help when riding that will be great.

Collection takes many years of training and building up the right muscles. It means that the horse is working well from behind, propelling himself forwards with his hind legs, the feet stepping into or just behind the prints left by the front feet, and his front end is light – if you were to look at a collected horse he would have quite a high head carriage and his front end would appear to be higher than the back end and he would appear shorter and more compact than if he is uncollected. He would hold the bit quietly in his mouth without pulling or opening it but be guided by it. This comes from good hands from the rider and use of the back, legs and seat to both encourage the horse forward and to slow it down rather than using hands only. It is a subtle combination.

It should be pointed out that some horses are physically incapable of true collection – if they do not have good strong muscles behind the saddle, if they have tension in the back or mouth, and if they have either have very long thin necks, or thick short ones with thick throats.

Use of hill walking and trotting poles on a regular basis will help to get the muscles built up from behind, but this will take many months, and also some gymnastic jumping will encourage the horse to use its back end. Does not have to be high, just enough to make him work and place his feet more precisely.

Also work on balance and rhythm of the trot work and leg yielding will help to get the horse more collected – if it is physically capable of it!

I’m doing rodeo for the first time soon, but since my horse is so old she won’t be of any use to me as a rodeo horse. So I’d like to know [on average] how much good training for a new rodeo horse would cost, and how long I would have to keep her/him in training. I’m just trying to get a good guideline here for how much money I need.
Thanks! xx
I’m interested in pole bending, barrel racing, calf roping and goat tying.

Everything is relative and it will make a difference where you are geographically. It will make a difference as to what you want the trainer to accomplish as well. To make a general statement, you get what you pay for but you could get someone in the range of $1,000 to $1,500 per month and you would have to supply all of the feed, hay, etc. for your horse while it is being trained.

Other things to be considered would be the level of training the horse possesses when the trainer takes possession of the horse. Secondly, how advanced level of training do you want the horse to have at the termination of the training period? You are asking a lot if you are sending in a totally green horse that you want trained to be able to take immediately into competition in these four areas.

Dependent upon how much you pay for the horse with the addition of the training fees and day-to-day upkeep of the horse, it might be to your advantage to purchase a more finished horse. That would allow you to begin competing sooner and could allow you to advance quicker to begin the ROI of your horse. Again, you did not mention if you are interested in competing in local shows or if you want to advance your riding career to professional levels. Another consideration that you did not mention was your level of expertise and if you anticipate a trainer to work only with the horse and how you plan to address improving your advancement as a rider so that you will be adequately matched with the ability of your horse.

So, while your question appears relatively obvious and simple, it could be interpreted as quite a complicated situation that could be extensive in bringing it to a conclusion. Good luck in your search for your new horse. In this market, if you look in the right places, you can get an amazingly talented horse that could have a remarkable professional future with you if that is what you want and you have the ability to bring it to fuition.

they don’t watch that intently, once he is done with and off of the "collection/phantom horse" (fake horse for the stallion to mount) they remove the tubing and collect the semen. then it can be shipped off for AI(artificial insemination).

Good luck!

How tall of a horse should she get?? And she is about 125lbs.

honestly she could get away with riding a stocky 14.2 hand pony up to 16h horse probably the perfect size horse will be between 15h to 15.2 if she wants a horse a little bigger she has a little room to grow into but as i said at her size she could even go smaller it all matters on how comfortable she feels on the horse and if she likes a short stride or a long stride gate good luck
