How do I know what the odds are so I know how much I have won back?

The odds on horse races change all the way up until post time.

The odds are based on how much money is bet on which horse. A "favored" horse is only favored because the most money is bet on them.

That’s why at the end of each race, they always show the payouts… because they have to wait to calculate the odds.

(Kind of dumb in my opinion, but a lot of people like betting on it, I don’t judge)

Use google to find some therapy barns. These barns focus on helping the mentally and/or physically handicapped develop equine skills. Most cities have a local therapeutic barn.

Today is so hot where I am, and I am not sure what kind of rug I should be putting on my horse. Should she be wearing no rug?

I put on either a cotton or mesh rug when it’s hot.
It keeps the UV rays and bugs off the horse while still not making them overheat.

Mine are very sensitive skinned TB’s though. Some horse are better off without.

I want to find out if they are actually poisoning my horses. I’ve set up cameras, and I haven’t been able to catch them, so I now believe that the vet i’m paying money to fix my horses, is really hurting my horses.

That is terrible of you to blame other people when you have no proof. Is it just stupid to blame people from 10 years ago. Have you ever considered the fact that YOU may be the one poisoning the horses? Have you ever even bothered to ASK the vet what’s wrong with them? What are his opinions? No vet would poison an animal. It takes a lot of work to be a vet and no one who hates animals is going to toil through years of training.

I think you are the one making your horses sick. Stop feeding them crap and remove poisonous plants. Change their water and take care of them. Your horses aren’t going to get consistently sick if you treat them right. People like you shouldn’t own horses.

Kill pens at the auctions.

That’s where a local rescue gets the bulk of their horses…they get in about 70 or so at a time.
They also pay slaughter price, so the horses go for cheap and they find lots of em who are in great shape.

You should be able to find pregnant mares easily. They are what fill up the kill pens (a preg mare is heavier = the owner gets more $ from the killer buyer)

Yes, there’s still horses being sent to slaughter….to Mex and Canada.

You can also post flyers at the tack shops and business cards.

Your best bet are the auctions where there are no vets. Where horses just get dumped by owners.

It is 900 miles from their current location to my house. I received some quotes from horse transportation companies and need to make a decision. I heard that air ride trailer is better for horses going long distance. Is it true? A company that transports rescued horses gave me a good quote. But some websites are saying that transporters of rescued horses have higher risks of transmitting infection or accidents of behavioral problems. Is it true? I appreciate any advice on choosing horse transportation.

I always say if air ride wasn’t better, why would they make it? For long distance like your trip I would say the horses would be more comfortable on an air ride trailer. You may find a carrier that will haul your horses most of the way on air ride, then transfer them to a non air ride trailer for the balance of the trip if they don’t want to drag all the other horses on the truck out of the way while delivering your 2 guys. It may be difficult to find a carrier with air ride equipment that is going your way with a load as well, depending on the route. Also, I suggest you use a licensed carrier. I am pretty sure if you use "Sam Smith" and he doesn’t have authority, you may be exposing yourself to more liability than you may know. If you just use someone with a trailer, then they are working for you, if something happens, you may be liable.
Most carriers clean and disinfect their trailers on a regular basis. But yes I guess if your guys are in a trailer with a horse that is sick, like humans on a plane, they may or may not catch it.

Where you live in your opinion what color combo horse does everyone gush over?
The judges wow at Pinto colored horses that have super clean patterns!

As generic and obviously "preferred" show horses for english OR western seems to be Chestnut or bay,
mainly because they are so commonly bred, and are way more abundand, (not to mention easier to come by when looking for a calm show horse), more unique colors that catch the judges eyes are pinto paints, overos, roans (blue roans are gorgeous), and any kind of multicolored horse with BRIGHT CLEAN contrast.
I really love seeing grays, with dark dark gray mane and tail, and lightgray bodies.
it really depends what kind of show you are at, whether its appearence or performance,
i dont think color is really going to pursued them to pick YOU over someone with a bay or chestnut,
but you will definitely catch their eye if you have a unique colored horse, and if you have the SKILL as well, extra points to you!

Ive noticed here in illinois, at 4-h shows, they love chestnuts as well, but bright colored paints and cremes are also very popular.

Typically, a horse is no longer contagious 30 days after recovering from strangles. However, if you are concerned (especially with horses younger than 5) about new horses coming into your barn, there are a couple of tests available. Do you normally "quarantine" new horses by segregating them from the rest? I am a strong believer in this, yet it is seldom seen in most barns.

There was a time period when they died out and then afterwards horses were brought back to the Americas via the Spanish Conquistadors. So, were horses there during Jesus’ time, or did they die out far sooner than that?

The last prehistoric North American horses died out between 13,000 and 11,000 years ago, at the end of the Pleistocene, but by then Equus had spread to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Then as you say, they were reintroduced by the Spaniards.
