I am trying to buy a horse and i want to know how to tell if the horse is healthy or not. I don’t want to get a horse that has colic or has some type of problem but i don’t want to get a vet check. How do you tell if a horse is lame or sick. I really don’t want to get a vet check if not necessary. I also am looking at this ex race horse, do you know if ex race horses ever have bad legs from racing? Is it a good idea to get a ex race horse? Please tell me what breed you think is a good breed to buy and what a healthy horse should look like. Thanks!
I would highly reccommend a vet check. they do check the health or a horse but depending on what stage you have they check the legs and everything to look for signs of lameness and see if they will able to do what you want it to do. Personally i wouldn’t reccommend a ex race horse…well it depends what you want to do…if you want to go cantering with friends then you may struggle to keep control. And yes depending on how serious their racing career was they can suffer from problems with their legs or backs. If you want a straight forward horse try to find something with a bit of pony in it e.g. a connemara x or welsh x or an irish sport horse so irish draught x Tb. Pure TB generally are a bit tricky (not all though). And to find out if its healthy 1. try to stay away from any dodgy dealings, if something seems suspicious then it is, 2. make sure you try the horse a few time if you really like it and 3. generally it should have a clean, full, shiny coat, clear eyes, clear nose. And you should ask for it to be trotted up infront of you…here you want to check for any sign or lameness and stand infront of it as its trotting towards you so you can see if it dishes (its hooves twist out as it trots) and check if its pigeon toes (feet stood turned in). Also check its legs , look for any lumps or bumps, heat, swelling, scars and ask if you find any of the following. I would go into more detail but hope this helps
