How much will horse training be?

admin on June 4th, 2011

I have a gelding that is hitting 4 now and it really needs done. I have hardly worked with him, haven’t even touched the round pen. How much do you think training will be if I want him western and how many months do you think I should enroll him for? I live in Wyoming if that helps any.

training is whatever the trainer you call charges.

every single trainer has a different fee.

some will be $10 an hour (usually not the good ones)

some will be $25 an hour, up to $30 an hour, or by the month….$500- $1000 a month is typical. anything cheaper and you need to be careful.

you’re going to have to actually do the research yourself and find trainers in your area to find out the exact cost. it can be more or less. depends on the level of knowledge and skill of the trainer.

realistically…because your 4 yr old is totally unbroke…you should plan on 6 months to 1 year of training.

it takes 1 year of 5 day a week training to really be able to say, "this horse is totally broke for anyone to ride"

not less than that

any….and I do mean any…trainer that tells you they can get your horse well broke in less than 3 months is a liar and will probably be abusive and take loads of short cuts.

the first 30 days: the horse is barely being introduced and understanding and accepting

after 60 days: the horse is more familar with stuff and a bit more accepting

after 90 days: the horse is familar and comfortable with everything….but still needs an experienced and confident person handling and riding him

after 6 months: the horse is quite familiar and comfortable with everything, can be handled by a less experienced person under the eye of the trainer….so you need to take lessons too to know how to become the confident rider the horse will need

after 1 year: if the training was properly done, most anyone can ride the horse and handle the horse. the horse is confident to do just about anything….arena, trail….he’s well broke.

Also…if you think you can just send him out and get back a well broke horse and that’s it (if you are not an experienced rider and know some training yourself so that you can maintain the training put into him)…..you’re wrong.

YOU will need to be trained with your horse.

Once your horse is well enough along in the training…after 3-6 months….YOU need to step in and take lessons from the trainer so that you don’t undo and mess up and cause the horse to lose confidence and backslide.

It’s never ever about just training the horse, but training the owner is much more important.

Figure on spending a bunch of money for this Investment.

I think you should enroll him for a minimum of 6 months. but be involved. go once a week at least. check up on the horse.

it’s very important that you check up on the horse. if you don’t and just ‘trust’ the trainer…you might end up with an abused horse, or get cheated out of money because the trainer didn’t do anything or much with the horse.

This is a promo for Mount Up Ministries’
Salvation Through a Horse’s Eyes Colt college horse training clinic.

This is a 3 hour horse training clinic featuring Colton Walter from Mount Up Ministries, training a 3 year old filly.

Watch as Colton Walter takes an unbroken, wild horse and in three hours trains it to be handled, led, saddled, and ridden around the round pen.

Colton’s “Pressure and Release” training method quickly and effectively overcomes the horse’s natural resistance and leads the horse to trust Colton with every part of it body.

The trainings steps included in this program include:
Facing and overcoming fear situations, Rope Horse And Lead Out, Rope Around The neck, head, girth, flank, rump, each foot, introducing rider, blanket, and saddle, driving the horse, mounting the horse, carrying the rider, turns, aggressive speed and turns, stops and backing up, rider introduced fear situations, and roping.

What has this got to do with the Gospel? The analogies between and wild horse and our own lives are awesome. The horse must come to the point where he trusts the trainer to train him, making him useful. The horse builds a relationship with the trainer, step by step through the training process.

God desires for us to take these same steps. Trust Him, accept Him, give our lives over to Him, and in all this build a relationship with Him.

In this program you’ll learn about training a horse, and also about yourself and about God.

So Saddle up, and get ready to the great adventure God has ready for you!

This horse raining clinic is presented in it’s entirety. You will see in real time how quickly a horse can progress from wild to trained.

Before each training step is a description screen showing the training step, the purpose, the goal of the horse, and a spirtual application relating the step to our own lives.

Approximate Running Time 3 Hours
