Check the sales sites you normally would. I’m not from Australia, but they have them out there. Just select the location you’re moving to and how far you’re willing to travel for it. Then work from there.

you can buy horses outside of any city, but if it was a quest-specific person, you will have to reload an older save to get around that. If you didn’t need the particular person for a quest, someone else should take over the business after a few months.

I would like someone to respond who actually goes to the sales. …and please, do not say anything about slaughter…it is ILLEGAL in the states. Thats why prices are so low. I’d really like to get in contact with a sale barn owner or frequent buyer. We can make money together. I have an unlimited supply of excellent horses. All coggins and great hooves. Only someone in the know, need respond. Thanks in advance!
Also, I am in Tennessee and would like to bring horses down to Florida.

Right now prices are down and alot of them are going for meat sales.
Check craigslist, dreamhorse, horseclicks and horseville to find comparable horses in your area.

Yes best offer means they will consider lower prices & will pick the highest amount.
for example they have offers of 100,150,200,300,& 450 & thats all the offers they get they will sell the horse to the person offering $450 because its the highest & the closest to their asking price.

Since there are already so many answers I doubt this will be answered, but whatever. If I am going to go to a horse auction with a pro like you have said, how much money should I have ready if I’m looking for an already broke trail horse? Most likely Quarter horse. I know they all vary, and I shouldn’t expect to get a horse at my first auction, but how much money would you suggest? I really don’t want to spend more than 1,000-1,200. Is this reasonable for a well broke horse?

You can end up with a really good horse or a really bad horse. I have bought several amazing horses from auctions, never been burned yet- knock on wood. But I have been going to auctions for a long time just to see what happens, how they work, who’s a dealer, who’s drugged, who’s a kicker, etc.
Your price limit is fine, I personally wouldn’t ever spend that much at an auction but that’s just me, for that price you can find one online and test it beforehand.
My best buys: a 11 y/o bay paso fino mare- bought $300 sold 3,000.(Ended up being used for lessons)
a 8 y/o- dun peruvian paso mare- bought- $280
a 8 y/o bay peruvian paso cross mare- bought – $400- sold 1,200.
Worst: (mt boss’s buys not mine)- a 2 y/o paint gelding- ‘broke’- he’d never been ridden before the sale and it was clear after getting on. I ended up getting some busted ribs, sprained fingers a concussion, etc.
A bomb proof mare and foal… she was bombproof alright, she wouldnt move for anything. Not even a bomb. When she finally moved for us she exploded into a bucking fit and we told him to take her back to the auction asap.
Anyway, go to several auctions, go behind the scenes and make friends with the workers since they will often give you tips.
Look for: Horses tied up away from the others, horses tied up very short- both could indicate a kicker or striker. Horses with the seller around to answer questions- a good seller will be there and may even let you ride the horse. Saddle sores, good hooves, teeth/age, sway backed- do not trust a horse with a saddle on and tied to be broke. If you see a sweet horse and pet it and it just stands there no matter what you do, has glassy eyes and is in the same spot after 20 minutes- give it up, it’s drugged. Extreme sweat marks before entering the ring- has probably been run to exhaustion just before the sale. Feet in very poor condition most likely mean it has just been turned loose in a pasture and not worked. My rule is no hoof, no horse.
Just because a horse acts up in the ring does not mean they are bad horses- it’s small and scary. Still, watch the horses eyes and movements. I dont like buying any horse I cant check out before bidding.
Bring:
a pro/trainer
a small notebook- note the horses sale number, characteristics, age/breed/color, and how much you would spend. I like a check, check plus, check minus system personally.
A limited amount of money that you are not willing to go over, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment.
Best of luck, check craigslist and horseclicks as well- look over what horses seem to be worth. Also remember as much as we’d like to, we cant take home every single sad and hungry horse at a sale, there are just too many. :(

Take someone VERY knowledgeable about spotting horses with subtle problems and good at spotting horses which may have been drugged. It’s well known for sellers to take uncontrollable beasts to sales, drug them into seeming like calm horses, selling them on, the drugs wear off, you find yourself with a maniac animal you can’t even get near!

You need to go with someone who can spot health problems from a mile off, sales can be a bit of a dumping ground. There are the odd diamonds in the rough there, and genuine decent horses too, but you have to be VERY careful!
