Breeders’ Cup interviews with Frank Lyons of TVG fame, Chip Woolley of Mine That Bird fame, but not so much about the horse as about his thoughts on his likeness on the front of the Daily Racing Form, and finally, Bobby Jackson. No Todd Pletcher interview today. He seemed pretty … tense … or maybe he just thinks I’m the curse of bad luck. A winning trifecta ticket of Ed’s, and finally, two men that drank too much. I never did catch up with Chris Kotulak. Darn it! Maybe some day … maybe tomorrow! Frank said Chris is single! Woo hoo!

Just some footage taken by friends at the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic in what was likely Zenyatta’s final race. She will be greatly missed. Zenyatta is not only a “Horse of the Decade,” but also a “Horse of the People” — she inspired so many fans, and the connection she had with them is just indescribable. I have never witnessed such admiration (even for human entertainers and athletes) in my life! She will surely go down in the history books as one of the GREATEST horses that ever lived! I feel very lucky to have seen her and to have witnessed her races in my lifetime. I am thankful for all the memories, which I will share with all my children and great, great, grandchildren

why do most paint horse breeders have solid colored broodmares?

Seriously, why? they breed their colorful stallions to a solid mare. does breeding colorful paint to colorful paint decrease the chance of a colorful foal? why do they always use solids?

i KNOW that colorful paints can mate with colorful paints and produce color…my friends overo bred with a tobiano and produced an overo that looked EXACTLY like the overo stallion…

but can someone explain this to me?

Many breeders aren’t breeding just for colour. Though colour is awesome, and paints, appaloosas and other breed registries appreciate unique colours, temperament and conformation are also key factors in producing top quality foals. If a mare is a great performance horse and is obedient, smart, and a good mother, many breeders will take the chance and breed her. As has been said before, many paint stallions can be homozygous for their respective pinto pattern, or even carry more than one pattern. Mares can also express pinto patterns in a minimal form, making them appear as if they only have the usual stockings and face markings. Breeding a coloured stallion to a non-coloured mare has at least a 50% chance of producing a spotted foal.

Also, for patterns like Overo, which is closely linked to a recessive trait that is lethal in homozygous form, it is safer to breed certain pinto stallions to solid-coloured mares. If you breed an overo to an overo there is at least a 25% chance that your foal will not live.

I bred a coloured appaloosa mare to a solid, non-characteristic appaloosa stallion, because the stallion was well-built and had a desirable temperament. He was also a versatility champion and was proven in trail, jumping, and in both western and hunt seat pleasure and equitation. I was hoping for some colour, but mostly, I was hoping for a well-tempered and attractive performance horse.

Dolls such as these were originally made to act as good luck charms by horse breeders in Aomori prefecture, an area of Japan long famous for quality equine stock. This doll is in good condition with some marks and scratches from handling and is less than 20 years old.

I am planning on becoming a major horse breeder; what breed of horses should I breed?

Do you need a breeding license to breed horses? I want to get a farm with around 50 acres and get 25-30 Mares and a Stud and let out in the field and be a breeder. What breed of horse should I get? I am planning on being responsible and not cross-breeding. Do I really need a vet out? I mean horses have babies in the wild just fine..

First off YES..a license is required. So, once you get your license then and only then will we advise on what breed you should consider breeding. And, I don’t recommend any of the schools advertised on matchbook covers. Find an accredited breeding for dummies school.

Also, why not the breed of your stallion that fell and can’t get up?? Are you not happy with that breed?
