Where can I get a free arabian horse?

admin on April 24th, 2010

I love arabian horses and I know there are people out there that have horses that have lost interest in them, can’t afford to care for them or just plain don’t want them anymore and sometimes they suffer abuse because of these circumstances. I can provide a comfortable home and lots of love to an unwanted horse.

anyone who can use a computer can just put the horse on ebay and let the bids rolling in. There must be a compelling reason for the owner to give it away for free.

one source you can check is your local veterinarians and animal hospitals.

  1. I doubt you would get a nice arab free*
But try putting a wanted add up in horse feed shops or online like on horsemart etc :)

  2. I would ask local rescues and shelters if they have any Arabians. However, be sure you know what you are getting, because unwanted horses tend to be the old, sick, or high energy/hard to maintain horses. Rescues/shelters have lower prices, but but there is still a fee to pay for the feed, shots, medications, etc.

  3. Why can’t you afford to pay for a horse? Buying a horse is the tip of the iceberg and pales in comparison to the cost of keeping them…horses cost thousands to keep every year, sometimes more. A free horse will usually come with serious health problems or be very old, which generally results in large vet bills. If you can’t afford to buy it you can’t afford to keep it, IMO. You need more than a field to keep a horse, it costs a lot of money and time, and if you are keeping the horse at home there’s tonnes to consider…company in the form of another equine, land management, time management, suitable fencing, shelter, worm and parasite control, feet and shoeing, vets, correct feeding and care. If you plan on keeping your horse boarded you should know it is VERY expensive, hundreds in a month sometimes.

If you genuinely can afford and have the experience to care for a horse, try going to your local auction/ horse sale. Plenty of extremely good quality horses are going for killer price right (the rock bottom price the slaughterhouses pay for horse flesh), and as Arabians are so common, they will be among them. Even some horses that are progeny of top show horses have gone for kill at sales, and you will be saving a horse from the butcher. Please remember though, that you are not saving the horse if you do not have the facilities and experience to care for it.

http://fuglyblog.com/ is a great blog to read if you have/love horses, it has some very upsetting stories, but also a lot of good advice and tips on what is involved in caring for horses.
